A true treasure from SpillingTheBeans’ rare coffee selection of beans from “the World’s tiniest coffee islands” this Sunday we present a Coffee of the Day from the remote islands of Sao Tome e Principe, which are located off the West African coastline in a triangular between Nigeria and Gabon.

The islands were colonized by Portugal and were at the height of its colonial past one of the world’s biggest cocoa producers, while Sao Tome was among the earliest of origins where coffee was introduced as a cash crop in 1802. The workers on most of the farms at both Sao Tome and the neighboring island of Principe have since the beginning of cultivation primarily been found among migrants from Cape Verde.

The coffee is from the farm of Monte Café, one of the oldest plantations on Sao Tome, which sells most of its coffee to Italian born Claudio Corallo who almost single-handedly can be credited for the revival of the island’s coffee and cocoa industry.

SpillingTheBeans was privileged to be able to visit this coffee farm in the spring of 2007 and can testify that the coffee is very full-bodied with mild acidity and a strong aroma – a wonderful coffee! heart
